No Time for Art

No Time for Art is an ongoing series of short video essays reclaiming the forgotten Jewish women artists erased by history — beginning with Season 1: Ashkenazi Jewish women of my grandmother’s generation, from her shtetl and the wider world around it, who made art against everything stacked against them. As a painter, I bring their work back into view the way one artist looks at another’s, and ask what it still has to tell us about making, seeing, and surviving.

Liane Balaban is a multidisciplinary artist whose work spans performance, writing and digital media. Her acting career began with New Waterford Girl (1999) and includes roles in Definitely, Maybe, One Week, and Midnight at the Paradise, alongside television credits like Supernatural and Covert Affairs. She co-created Crankytown, an NFB digital storytelling project earning her a Gemini nomination, and her journalism has appeared in the National Post and CBC Radio. She now brings that same instinct for narrative to Instagram, where she explores culture, creativity, and midlife through @lianeclara, alongside a visual art practice shared at @liane.balaban.
