The Onlies

Growing up the only Jewish kid in a lily-white, Christian farm town, ALEX wants nothing more than to fit in, to not be Jewish or different in any way. But when a cute new girl, ZOYA, moves to town — cool, fearless, and proudly Persian — their unlikely friendship transforms the way both of them see themselves… and what it means to be an “Only.”

Chad has written on scripted, doc, variety, game, and late-night shows, including Chelsea Handler’s mockumentary "After Lately"; Adam McKay’s Amazon doc series, "This Giant Beast That Is the Global Economy"; and Metallica’s live concert/awards show, "The Helping Hands Concert," with Jimmy Kimmel. Chad recently co-EP’ed Paramount’s "I Wanna Rock: Chasing the 80s Metal Dream" and was a consultant on the rock docs "If These Walls Could Rock" and "Takin’ Care of Business." He currently runs the nonfiction/documentary department at The Littlefield Company. Mahtub was a writer on Season 2 and Season 3 of Netflix's comedy series NOBODY WANTS THIS, where she co-wrote episode 202 and upcoming episode 308. She is a queer, first-generation Iranian-American born to a single mother in Cincinnati, Ohio. She graduated Magna Cum Laude from Vanderbilt University where she studied political science and financial economics. Mahtub is known for crafting emotionally grounded, authentic queer characters who bring depth and dimension to the worlds they inhabit. She currently serves as the Vice Chair of the Middle Eastern WGA Committee. Mahtub is a stand-up, surfer, and was a competitive figure skater over half her life ago. Chad’s a mediocre runner and obsessed music fan. They both write TV, and claim to be writing partners, although this is the first thing they’re writing together. They probably would’ve written more stuff if they could stop talking about what they’d do if they had their own assistants and actually get to work, but hopefully the Screenwriters Lab can give them the structure and discipline they can’t find on their own!
